What Is Permanent Jewelry and How Does It Work?
(A Gainesville Studio Owner Explains)
If you’ve been seeing permanent jewelry everywhere lately and keep wondering what the heck it actually is, this post is for you. I’m Tara, the owner of Iris Alcoves, Gainesville’s first permanent jewelry studio, and I’ve been welding jewelry onto people since 2022. I’ve answered this question hundreds of times, and I love it every single time. Let me break it all down for you.
Okay, So What Is Permanent Jewelry?
The simplest way I explain it to first-timers: it’s jewelry without a clasp. But honestly? That doesn’t even scratch the surface of what it is. Permanent jewelry is a custom-fit piece (a bracelet, anklet, or necklace) that we help you design and then weld directly onto your body. No clasp. No taking it on and off. No losing it in the bathroom sink. You just… wear it. Always.
It fits you perfectly because we custom fit it to YOU. Most store-bought jewelry doesn’t actually fit right. It’s either too loose or digs into your skin. Permanent jewelry sits exactly where you want it, every single time.
And from a lifestyle standpoint? It’s a game changer. As a mom of two, I personally love being able to feel put together without having to think about jewelry in the morning. It’s just
there. Effortless. But here’s the thing that surprises most people: permanent jewelry isn’t just a jewelry choice. It’s a moment. It marks something. College best friends getting linked before they go their separate ways. A mom adding each of her kids’ birthstones to a piece she’ll wear every day. Someone carrying a lost loved one’s handwriting engraved into a connector, close to their wrist forever. We have seen it ALL at Iris Alcoves, and I promise you, no two pieces mean the same thing.
How Does the Welding Process Actually Work?
I know, the word “weld” sounds scary. People picture sparks flying and protective gear and, like, a construction site. Let me paint you the real picture.
You come in, we sit down together, and we go through the whole design process. We talk about what metals you love, what you currently wear, your lifestyle, your style. Then we custom fit the chain to your wrist (or ankle, or neck) until it feels exactly right. You confirm the fit, we confirm the fit, you sign a quick waiver, and then the magic happens.
We place a small leather patch under the jewelry to protect your skin. We hand you our bedazzled safety glasses (yes, bedazzled, yes you’ll laugh, yes you’ll feel a little ridiculous in the best way) and then we use our Orion pulse welder to “zap” the tiny jump ring that closes your piece. There’s a small, quick spark. That’s it. The jump ring fuses. Your bracelet is now seamless, claspless, and completely custom to you.
We also use argon gas during the weld (it’s tucked under the table where you’d never see it, definitely not the cute part of the experience) but it creates a cleaner, stronger bond and it’s the industry standard of care. We’ve also invested in top of the line welders and equipment because your safety matters and frankly, not everyone does. There are people out there using cheap machines they bought off Amazon and your skin and your piece deserve better than that. No shortcuts here.
The whole thing takes about 15 minutes for a simple bracelet. Get creative with connectors and charms and stacking multiple pieces and it takes a little longer, but we’re never rushing you. We’ve got beverages, good music, and air conditioning (we’re in Florida, you get it). Take your time. We also send every single guest home with a Polaroid photo and an aftercare bag: a cute satin mesh pouch with a polishing cloth, aftercare card, sticker, and our contact info. Because the experience doesn’t end when you walk out the door.
Let’s Talk About the Myths
The number one thing I hear before someone sits down in my chair: “Wait, so I can NEVER take it off?”
Here’s the truth: you can take it off any time you want. Scissors cut it. Done. And if you decide to cut it off and miss it (which happens more than you’d think), you can come right back in and we’ll re-weld it. Or we can add a clasp if you change your mind about the permanent part.
When I tell people this, I literally watch the relief wash over their face followed by new excitement. It’s one of my favorite moments.
And here’s a cool one most people don’t know: we can repurpose your existing pieces too.
Got an anklet you’re ready to retire? We can turn it into a bracelet. Sometimes you even get a little ring out of the leftover chain. No jewelry wasted here. We love finding creative ways to keep your pieces going.
Other myths I bust regularly:
“Is it like a piercing? Does it get welded onto your skin?” This one comes up more than you’d think! No and no. Permanent jewelry sits on top of your skin just like any other bracelet or necklace. We’re welding the jump ring that connects the ends of the chain together, not anything to your body. No needles, no skin contact with the welder, nothing like that. Just a tiny spark on a tiny piece of metal. That’s it.
“It’ll tarnish and look gross.” Not with the right metals. Our 14k gold filled option (our most popular by far) stays beautiful with minimal care. A little Dawn dish soap and water goes a long way.
“It’ll feel weird and annoying.” Nope. Custom fit means it moves with you, not against you. Most people forget they’re wearing it within a day.
“It’s not safe.” Our Orion pulse welder is designed specifically for permanent jewelry. The spark is tiny, controlled, and over in a second. If you have a pacemaker, we’d recommend checking with your cardiologist before booking, just to be safe. Otherwise, it’s truly one of the safest jewelry experiences out there.
What Metals Do You Offer?
At Iris Alcoves we carry:
Stainless Steel: durable, affordable, great for everyday wear
Sterling Silver: classic, beautiful, requires a little more care
14k Gold Filled: our most popular option, gorgeous, long-lasting, and a fraction of the cost of solid gold
Solid 14k Gold: the real deal, for the person who wants nothing but the best
When someone can’t decide, we always start with a conversation:
What do you currently wear?
Do you gravitate toward gold or silver?
What’s your lifestyle like?
Are you in the water a lot, working with your hands, in a professional setting
From there, we guide you toward the right choice. We’re not just selling you jewelry. We’re helping you find the piece you’ll wear every day.
What Makes Iris Alcoves Different?
I’ll be honest with you: permanent jewelry has gotten popular. You can find it at pop-ups, at kiosks, at events. So why does it matter where you go?
Here’s what I hear from our guests over and over: it’s the vibe. It’s the space. It’s the people.
Iris Alcoves is clean, calm, and homey. We have good music, cold drinks, and zero rush. We’re not herding people through. We’re having actual conversations. We’re making actual connections. People come in for a bracelet and leave feeling like they found a secret gem they immediately want to tell their friends about.
Our team genuinely cares about the piece, about the fit, about how you feel when you walk out. And our repair and reweld policy means we’ve got your back long after your appointment. This isn’t a transaction. It’s an experience.
We also offer a wide variety of chain options, not just the typical styles you see everywhere. We carry handmade pieces from other women artisans, which means when you find something you love here, you’re also supporting someone who made it with their hands. And when you walk through our door, you just made a new friend. That would be us.
Who Is Permanent Jewelry For?
Honestly? Almost anyone. We see:
Best friends celebrating milestones
Moms and grandmas creating meaningful pieces
Brides and bridal parties
Sorority sisters getting linked before a new chapter
People honoring someone they’ve lost
Women who just want to feel put together every single day without thinking about it
The only situations where we’d pause: if you’re a medical professional who scrubs in for surgeries (we’ve linked thousands of nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers, but if you scrub in, an anklet is probably your best bet!), or if you have a pacemaker and haven’t checked with your cardiologist first. For most people? Permanent jewelry just… works.
What about MRIs? This is the most common “what if” we get, and the answer is honestly simpler than people expect. Some facilities will ask you to remove it, some won’t. It varies. If your facility requires it off, just cut it, put it somewhere safe, and come back in for a reweld. No biggie. If they say you’re fine to leave it on, follow their guidance. Either way, just ask your facility or doctor specifically and go from there. We’ve got you covered on the reweld side no matter what.
Why I Built a Whole Studio Around This
I had no idea how deep jewelry stories go until I started doing this. Every single piece means something. Every appointment carries a story. We laugh, we cry, we celebrate, we console. We get to be part of the moments people carry with them, sometimes literally on their wrist for years.
At Iris Alcoves, we wanted to build a space where the average person could walk into a jewelry experience, design something completely their own, and walk out with it same day.
No ordering. No waiting. No “come back in two weeks.” You design it, we build it in front of you, and it’s yours. That’s what permanent jewelry is. And that’s why we love it so much.
